The Township of Maplewood invested significant funds into the streetscape plan for Springfield Avenue. Work began with the repaving of the Avenue beginning in the Fall of 2001 and completed in spring of 2002. Further enhancements to the road surface include a special stamping and imprinting of the road surface where medians and crosswalks occur to give the visual appearance of brick pavers and stone masonry throughout the length of the Avenue. All phases of the improvements were completed in 2011.
On November 8, 2011, Maplewood Township elected officials, municipal workers and the Columbia High School Marching Band celebrated the $10 million in improvements on the 2.5 miles of Springfield Avenue.
