The Springfield Avenue Partnership
participates in various community and business improvement
projects throughout the year.
Streetscape
The Township of Maplewood is investing significant
funds into the streetscape plan for Springfield Avenue.
Work began with the repaving of the Avenue beginning
in the Fall of 2001 and completed in spring of 2002.
Further enhancements to the road surface include
a special stamping and imprinting of the road surface
where medians and crosswalks occur to give the visual
appearance of brick pavers and stone masonry throughout
the length of the Avenue. This work was completed
in the summer of 2002.

Sidewalk
The remainder of the streetscape work will
be carried out by the township and include new sidewalks,
added greenery in the form of trees, shrubbery and
flower planters, additional pedestrian-scale lighting,
benches, information kiosks and traffic-calming measures
such as “bump-outs” to create additional
pedestrian friendly spaces and slow down vehicular
traffic. The initial streetscape changes will focus
on each “gateway” area as one enters
into Maplewood from the East and West and the existing
pedestrian node at the corner of Prospect Street
and Springfield Avenue. Additional areas of work
along the Avenue will be phased in over subsequent
years.
The Township is also working diligently
to secure additional federal, state and county funding
to supplement the current streetscape budget. The
Partnership is working with property owners and the
Township to encourage building and façade
rehabilitation which will enhance the planned streetscape
changes.
